The North American economy has been a divergent tale of two economies. In Q3, the American economy was severely buffeted by the hurricane winds of two lethally large hurricanes. Damage to Texas, Florida and other Southern States was extensive. The impacts on the US economy were negative and severe. The US economy had added 138,000 new jobs in July and a further 169,000 new jobs in August. The hurricanes’ impact caused a modest 33,000 jobs drop in September. It is estimated that 1.47 million Americans were off work in September due to the hurricanes impact. Net new jobs in the US for Q3 were 274,000.
